President Goodluck Jonathan has ordered that all women held in connection with the activities of the Boko Haram sect in the country be released even as the Senate today gave a nod to the president’s declaration of state of emergency in Borno, Yobe and Adamawa states.
According to a statement by the Defense Ministry Tuesday, the decision to set the women held in connection with “terrorist activity free was aimed at enhancing peace efforts in Nigeria”.
Boko Haram has consistently demanded the release of especially women arrested and imprisoned for terrorist charges.
Recently, the sect announced that it has began to abduct women and and children.
The defence ministry said a number of suspects detained for “terrorist activities” would be freed.
“The measure, which is in line with presidential magnanimity to enhance peace efforts in the country, will result in freedom for suspects, including all women under custody,” the statement added.
