Flash! Boko Haram vs Niger-Delta Militants: Clampdown On Boko Haram An Injustice Against North – Buhari

The Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) presidential candidate in the 2011 election, Maj-Gen. Mohammadu Buhari, yesterday described the war against the Boko Haram sect as injustice against the North.

Buhari spoke as “Guest of the Week” on Hausa programme of Liberty Radio, Kaduna.

He said special treatments were given to the Niger Delta militants by the Federal Government, while the Boko Haram members were being killed daily and their houses demolished.

The former Head of State said he was not in support of the emergency rule declared in Borno, Yobe and Adamawa states because President Goodluck Jonathan failed from the onset in addressing the nation’s insecurity.

Buhari said the security challenges confronting the country started in the Niger Delta where he alleged that politicians desperate to retain their positions recruited youths and armed them to win elections by force.

He said: “What is responsible for the security situation in the country is caused by the activities of Niger Delta militants.

“Every Nigerian that is familiar with happenings knows this. The Niger Delta militants started it all. What happened is that the governors of the Niger Delta region at that time wanted to win their elections, so they recruited youths and gave them guns and bullets and used them against their opponents to win elections by force.

“After the elections were over, they asked the boys to return the guns, the boys refused to return the guns. Because of that the allowance that was being given to the youths by the governors during that time was stopped.

“The youths resorted to kidnapping oil workers and were collecting dollars as ransom. Now a boy of 18 to 20 years was getting about $500 in a week, why will he go to school and spend 20 years to study and then come back and get employed by government to be paid N100,000 a month, that is if he is lucky to get employment.

“So kidnapping becomes very rampant in the South -South and the South-East. They kidnapped people and were collecting money.

“How did Boko Haram start? We know that their leader, Mohammed Yusuf, started his militant and the police couldn’t control them and the army was invited. He was arrested by soldiers and handed over to the police.

“The appropriate thing to do, according to the law, was for the police to carry out investigations and charge him to court for prosecution, but they killed him, his in-law was killed, they went and demolished their houses.

“Because of that, his supporters resorted to what they are doing today. You see in the case of the Niger Delta militants, the late President Umaru Musa Yar’adua sent an airplane to bring them, he sat down with them and discussed with them, they were cajoled and they were given money and granted amnesty.

“They were trained in some skills and were given employment, but the ones in the North were being killed and their houses were being demolished. They are different issues, what brought this? It is injustice.”

  3. Buhari is not fair in his comment. Why would he talk like that? A presidential candidate? Boko haram have been killing innocent people indiscriminately, over 3000 people are gone within the last 4years. The worst part is that they are not even asking for anything. Why would a general speak like that as if he has sympathy for their cause? I want to believe general Buhari didn’t say those words! If not , its totally apolitical and highly suspicious. It ll be a liability to his ambitions. He shd clear d air.

Is dat the news buhari wants to be hearing..pls let’s be fair and stop being sentimental….if more measures can b used to clamp down boko haram.. They shld..am from the north and I say a Big No to Boko-haram, they shld gve us a reasonable fact for the killings.. After all buhari said this country wud b ungovernable if he doesn’t win nd eva since he said that, the country has bin unsettled… I just wonder if acquiring power is a must.. He shld b advising and putting youths in line of how to govern the country and nt some 70+ plus old man… Haba gve we youths a chance pls

  5. These were the words of a man who wants to rule Nigeria. Instead of the likes of Buhari to rule Nigeria, Nigeria should divide. It has shown that when buhari assumes office, he will never go against BH, rather he will let them islamise the north.
All those who have hoped that Buhari will make a fine president should kill that dream, the General is trabalistic,he is bias, he is in support of terrorism. Buhari wants to play smart.
He is a failure from this statement. I was hoping to hear him speak against the Terrorist Act of B,instead he is in support of them.

  7. Buhari should have remain silence than what he had launched out, I now have a good knowledge of who our president to be is. in no way can we compare Boko Haram with the Niger Delta Militants in terms of killing and destruction of innocent soul. Many a times the Militants will kidnap (although very wrong) and eventually release their captives but boko haram are destroying en-mass without a definite reasonable purpose, not ready for dialogue, talk, nor settlement. They are worst than the last civil war. He had not been able to profound solution to the problem of terrorism all this while, now that there is positive move to the eradication of terrorism, he now open his mouth to let us know where he belong.
